Character History: Kyubey is first and foremost not from Earth. Despite his catlike appearance, he is, in fact, an alien species, although we never learn the name of his planet or where in the universe he is actually from.
His species, however, is an incredibly intelligent one. They came to the realization that through the process of Entropy, the universe was slowly beginning to die out. Entropy, of course, being the principle that energy output is always less than the input. It was something they wished to stop, naturally, to keep the universe alive and thriving, and his race is the only one to have discovered a way to do so.
The discovery had to do with human beings and their emotions. Specifically, girls in their second stage of development, who are more prone to great amounts of emotion. It seemed that, if a girl was made into a Magical Girl, something which defies logic itself and yet is still possible, they release a great amount of energy when they inevitably become so filled with grief that they become witches.
Thus, we have Kyubey's reason for existing on Earth. It's his job to find young girls and make contracts with them--they can wish for whatever they want, and in exchange, they must become a Puella Magi, or Magical Girl, and dedicate their lives to fighting witches. Ultimately, it's an endless cycle, constantly producing energy to stop the effects of Entropy.
One day, he finds a girl with the most potential he's ever seen--Madoka Kaname. Of course, he wants to make a contract with her as its entirely possible that with the energy she would release on her own, Entropy would be a worry of the past. However, in his hunting her down to talk to her, a Magical Girl by the name of Homura Akemi attacks him, trying to prevent him from getting to Madoka. But, using his telepathic comminucation, Kyubey calls out to Madoka for help. She rescues him, with the help of her friend Sayaka Miki, but as they run for it, they all find themselves in a witch's labyrinth.
Thankfully, another Magical Girl gets there in time to save the day, defeats the witch, and heals Kyubey. The girl, Mami Tomoe, then takes them all back to her home and she and Kyubey get into explanations--of witches, Soul Gems, contracts, and Magical Girls. Kyubey makes it clear that he wishes for both Sayaka and Madoka to make contracts with him, however, Mami knows it's a difficult choice to make, and offers to take the girls with her one witch hunts so they can get an idea of what it's like, and decide for certain whether they want to become Magical Girls or not.
In waiting for their decisions, Kyubey spends most of his time with the girls, and one day, while leaving the hospital, he, Madoka, and Sayaka come across a Grief Seed (a witch's egg) that's about to hatch and open up a labyrinth. Kyubey stays with Sayaka to keep an eye on the Seed while Madoka goes to fetch Mami. At the very least, if Kyubey and Sayaka end up in trouble, she can make a contract and defeat the witch herself.
Mami and Madoka show up in time, however, and the fight begins. At one point, it appears that Mami has defeated the witch, but it ends up being a trick, as the real witch appears and decapitates Mami. Sayaka and Madoka watch on in horror, and Kyubey, of course, begins trying to get them to make contracts with him. It seems like the perfect opportunity, at least until Homura appears and saves the day.
After witnessing Mami's brutal death, Madoka and Sayaka are distressed and afraid. The idea of becoming a Magical Girl is much more frightening to them now, and they tell this to Kyubey. It's disappointing news for him, but he can't force them into it and thus accepts their decision and leaves them, supposedly for good.
Not all that long later in the day, however, he senses strong emotions from Sayaka and appears right on time. It's something of his speciality, appearing at the exact right moment to get girls to make wishes. After all, he appeared to Mami after she was in a car crash and likely to die if not for the opportunity to make a contract. In this case, however, Sayaka wishes to heal the boy she has a crush on, and Kyubey happily obliges, making the contract and turning her into a Magical Girl.
Due to Mami's death, leaving her city or "territory" for witch hunting open to other Magical Girl's to take over, one named Kyoko Sakura shows up, only to be told by Kyubey that he just made a contract with a new girl earlier that day. Instead of taking off to somewhere else, however, Kyoko decides to stick around and eliminate Sayaka, not wanting to give prime territory to a rookie. Kyubey doesn't lift a finger to try to stop her, and doesn't even warn her against it. It's not his problem if Magical Girls fight each other, especially if, in the opportunity that Sayaka loses, he may be able to convince Madoka to make a contract with him.
The fight does eventually occur, and when it does, Kyubey is with Madoka behind a protective barrier put in place by Sayaka. As the fight goes on and it's clear that Sayaka is unlikely to win and will likely die, Kyubey tells the distressed Madoka that at this point, only a Magical Girl could break up the fight, there's nothing that he can do himself. Again, he tries to convince Madoka to make a contract, but again he's foiled when Homura shows up right in the nick of time and stops the fight.
Later on, Kyubey is home with Sayaka as she cleanses her Soul Gem with a Grief Seed. He tells her that it's important to keep her Soul Gem clean, and that she should retrieve more of the Seeds so she can become stronger. He also mentions that, if Madoka made a contract, she'd be an incredibly powerful Magical Girl who could easily win in a fight against Kyoko. Unfortunately for Kyubey, Sayaka refuses to get her friend involved.
The next night, Kyoko once again crosses paths with Sayaka and once again picks a fight with her. Before they can start, however, Madoka runs out and grabs Sayaka's Soul Gem from her hands and tosses it over the bridge. Sayaka collapses, and Kyubey reveals that when he makes them into Magical Girls, he puts their souls into the Soul Gems because as something so much smaller, it's easier to protect than in their fleshy, easily damaged bodies. The girls are all horrified by this realization, that they're essentially just shells, not even really human. Kyubey has an incredibly difficult time understanding why they're so angry, as it makes perfect logical sense to him. Their bodies are stronger, better for fighting witches, and their souls are so much easier to protect. Why humans value their bodies so much is something completely beyond him.
Thankfully, Homura returns Sayaka's Soul Gem to her, and she wakes up, not remembering a thing.
After she learns the whole thing about the Soul Gems, however, Sayaka is far from pleased and accuses Kyubey angrily of lying to her. Kyubey, however, doesn't believe he's done so. He told the truth, there were simply some details left out, ones that no girl ever asks about. Thus, it hardly seems important to him to tell them, and isn't tricking nor manipulation. He also goes on to tell her that having her soul detached from her body, it makes her body stronger, more able to handle pain and injury than it ever would be otherwise. With no remorse, he even demonstrates, placing a paw on her Soul Gem and simulating what it would be like for her to be stabbed with her soul still in her body. Of course, it's incredibly painful for her, and as she falls to the floor, Kyubey tells her that this way, she can shut the pain out, not feel it at all if she chooses.
Sayaka takes this ability a bit far, however. She shuts the pain out in her next witch fight, and while she gets injured, she doesn't feel any of it. After the fight, she hands the Grief Seed off to Kyoko, wanting to be a different Magical Girl, one who doesn't only fight for herself. However, she's weak after the battle, and her Soul Gem begins to dim.
As it begins to only darken further, Kyubey stops in to visit Homura and Kyoko, to tell the both of them about Sayaka's poor condition. He leaves it to them, and then appears to Madoka and tells her all about the potential she'd hold as a Magical Girl, how powerful she'd be, and how she'd probably even be able to save Sayaka. He's so close to getting her to make a contract again, but the moment before she agrees, Kyubey is suddenly riddled with bulletholes and falls over, dead, courtesy of Homura.
He returns a few minutes later in a fresh new body, after Madoka has left. He eats his previous body and notes his realization that Homura is not from this timeline. It's something he's slowly learned over the times he's met with her--she's a Magical Girl, and yet he doesn't recall creating her, which has had him quite confused. At least, until he realizes that she uses time magic.
Things continue to develop...poorly. Sayaka hits her end limit of grief, her Soul Gem completely dark, and as she collapses, it becomes a Grief Seed, from which a witch hatches. This is the reveal to the girls, aside from Homura, who already knew, that Magical Girls are all destined to become witches one day.
Kyubey tries to explain to a very upset Madoka after she's learned of what's happened to Sayaka. He tells her everything, about his species, about Entropy, about how the Magical Girls and witches are a method of producing energy to prevent Entropy. He tries to explain to her that his race doesn't hold any ill will towards humans, but as emotionless aliens, they don't understand human values, and thus don't understand why they get so upset over losing a few humans. If it's to save the universe, it shouldn't be a big deal to sacrifice a few. However, as expected, Madoka doesn't understand and remains upset over the whole thing.
Stopping in on Kyoko, Kyubey mentions his lack of understanding as to why she's bothering to expend magic to keep Sayaka's body fresh. When she asks him if it might be possible to get Sayaka's Soul Gem back, for it to change back from a Grief Seed to a gem, he can't give her a definite answer. No one had ever tried such a thing before, but he says that, as the existence of Magical Girls defies logic itself, it may be possible.
However, this is a complete lie, one told so that Kyoko would try to save Sayaka and thus get herself killed, leaving Homura as the only Magical Girl in the city with the extremely powerful witch, Walpurgisnacht, on its way. No Magical Girl could defeat this witch on their own, so if Homura is the only one left, he's certain he'll finally be able to get Madoka to make a contract with him. It's underhanded, but he sees nothing wrong with it at all.
Abilities/Special Powers:
Invisibility; Kyubey is invisible to all normal humans and can only be seen by Magical Girls or those who may become Magical Girls. However, considering the circumstances of the game, I think this power should be nerfed completely so he can be seen by everyone.
Telepathy; This is how Kyubey communicates. He doesn't speak verbally, instead allowing his voice to be heard in the heads of those he's speaking with. He can also allow Magical Girls (and potential Magical Girls) communicate telepathically with each other through him.
Wish Granting; Kyubey is capable of granting anyone any wish they so desire, no matter what it is. However, considering this would be viewed as a game breaking power, it will be weakened in Wonderland. He can still grant wishes, but none that allow people out of Wonderland, to end events, etc. If that's okay with the mods, of course!
Soul Gem Creation; When someone enters into a contract with him to become a Magical Girl and have their wish granted, Kyubey extracts their souls from their bodies and puts them in what is called a "Soul Gem". This is what allows Magical Girls to transform, as well as find witches. The process makes their bodies stronger and more agile. Not sure if this power should be nerfed or not, considering it's sort of his whole purpose, but! I'm okay with it if it's necessary.
Replication; This is essentially a process which makes Kyubey unable to be killed, as it seems his mind remains intact if his body is destroyed, and is instead transferred into a fresh new body. This power, however, will not be retained in game because where's the fun in him not being able to actually die, right?
Teleportation; Kyubey can move from place to place quickly, disappearing and reappearing.
Third-Person Sample:
How very curious. This place, this world, it's not like anything he's ever seen before. It's unique, so much so that it makes him wonder if perhaps it's in a universe all its own, as he's never even heard tales of a place quite like this Wonderland, as they call it.
The very moment Kyubey found himself somewhere new with no idea of how he actually got there, his curiosity had been piqued. He's always been in control of where he goes, and yet he's found himself somewhere against his will. Interesting. He doesn't react the way most of the new arrivals do. There is no panic, no fear, no desperation to return to Earth. Instead, his reaction has been more "huh, somewhere new? How fascinating." Thus, he takes to exploring, peeking through the gardens, checking out all the rooms in the mansion, prodding at the closets that hold a fascinating energy.
This must be a different universe all in itself, as illogical as it seems, if only because it seems to defy all logic. He can't sense any sort of Entropy occurring here, in fact, the place seems to create and destroy energy on its own as needed. The laws of thermodynamics don't exist here. The place is nothing but impossibilities.
Where there are impossibilities, there are questions, and where there are questions, there are experiments. Experiments that Kyubey is very interested in getting started on. Hopping up into one of the windows in one of the many rooms, the catlike creatures peers outside, down onto the gardens below, watching the other beings that have been brought here just like him. What sort of effect would it have on this world if he created contracts here? Are there even any willing parties who might have a wish in exchange for becoming a Magical Girl? Perhaps he'll have to look into it...
First-Person Sample:
Have you ever had a wish? One you wanted so badly that you would give almost anything for it?
[Red eyes peer unblinkingly through the screen as a white, catlike creature sits in front of the camera, device propped up against a wall so everyone can get a full, clear view of him. His tail gives a small swish through the air behind him, and his facial expression remains the same. His mouth doesn't even open when he speaks.]
One that even Wonderland itself is unable to grant you? Or perhaps doesn't wish to grant you?
[Head tilt. He's totally nailing the cute act. Or maybe the cute-creepy act.]
I can help you with that. I can give you what you want, if you're willing to make a deal with me. If you're interested, please, feel free to come and find me. I can explain my terms to you then, although considering I can give you whatever your heart desires, what I ask for in exchange is almost nothing in comparison.
[Eyes close to make it look like he's genuinely smiling, and Kyubey perks up in what appears to be a cheerful manner.]
I look forward to meeting with some of you!
[Because he knows he's bound to get at least a few bites. Come one, come all, let him make an army of Wonderland Magical Girls. Perhaps even boys here! Why not? There doesn't seem to be any sort of limit here in Wonderland. What could possibly go wrong?]
